I want to
do a competition, what do I need to do?
(a) To fence in any competition you will require
a fencing license, an application form for a
licence may be obtained from the NIFU website
www.nifu.co.uk.
Once you have obtained your licence which lasts
a year you can compete in any relevant competition,
i.e. Juniors in Junior competitions until the
age of 13 and Seniors in senior competitions.
(b) notify your club coach so you can have
extra lessons before the competition.
What do I need for a competition?
You will be required to have full fencing kit
as listed below to enable you to compete in
a competition:
FIE Mask
FIE Jacket
FIE Glove
FIE Plastron
FIE Breeches
Fencing shoes or trainers with low heal profile
2 weapons
2 bodywires
Long socks
Bag to carry your equipment in safely
Insurance (membership of NIFU)
Where can I obtain this fencing equipment?
Some if not all of the equipment may be borrowed
on loan by club members from the club Equipment
Officer. Remember to notify the Equipment Officer
two weeks in advance of the actual competition
you need the equipment for to enable the equipment
to be checked. You may also purchase fencing
equipment from the fencing suppliers, but please
allow sufficient time for it to arrive before
your need to use it. Links to fencing supplies
are in our links section.
What if I own my own equipment, do
I need to do anything before a competition?
Yes, the Club would advise you to arrange with
the club armourer to check your weapons, bodywires
and mask comply with Regulations and that they
work. This will save you time and the effort
of looking for someone to fix your weapons on
the competition day if you don’t know
how or have the right parts to do so.
Why do I need two weapons and bodywires
and what happens if I only own one of each?
Regulations require you to have two weapons
and bodywires at the piste. You will already
be wearing one bodywire and be plugged into
one weapon the other ones are there as spares,
which allows for a quick change over if anything
happens to your original equipment. If you only
own one you could borrow one on loan from the
club for the competition, however, these would
need to signed out and signed back in by the
equipment office.
Do I need to take anything else to
a competition with me?
The club would suggest that you take bottles
of water, a packed lunch, a towel and a personnel
first aid kit with you to any competition along
with your fencing licence, as you will need
to show it at the check in desk.
