They Travel from afar to compete at Carrick!
The Carrick Castle Tournament was once again a great success with over 100 fencers taking part over the two days of competition. This year we were delighted to welcome fencers from Poland, Hungry, Mexico, Spain, Japan and Canada as well as from all parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Foil and Sabre took place on the Saturday. Unfortunately the weather, although not bad, was just to unpredictable to allow us to fence outdoors on the battlements - always a great attraction of the Carrick Tournament (when the weather allows) - but we did have fencing in the Marquee, the banqueting hall and at the top of the Keep. The lack of the extra pistes meant we were only able to run with 1 round of poules unfortunately.
The Epee events were staged on the Sunday and again a good turn out of top class fencers were to seen battling for the PBT Sponsored 1st place ceremonial swords. Again thanks you to PBT for there on-going support of the Carrick Tournament. The weather started off even wetter than the Saturday but we did manage to get two poule rounds in. We will be looking at the Saturday timing for next year to try and facilitate 2 poule rounds on the Saturday as well.
What do you think is better - a second round of Poules or a cut in the DE to the top 16 if necessary? - your thoughts to david@stormontfencing.com
We will have a fuller report, some photos and the full results available here soon. We will announce that they are available by email to everyone who has subscribed to our email list (see above left) so sign up now to hear. We will also announce dates for next year soon and they too will be circulated to our email list.
The organisers would like to express their gratitude
to all those who helped with and supported the event;
Carrickfergus Castle and the Environment & Heritage
Service for providing such a spectacular venue for
the event; Carrickfergus Borough Council for financial
support; PBT for providing the magnificent 1st prize
ceremonial swords for all 6 events; Coca-Cola for
providing Deep Riverrock Pure Still Water and, most of all, our competitors
themselves, many of whom traveled from far a field
to compete at the tournament, some making their first
visit to Northern Ireland.
